Elders of the Begena: The Harp of David in Ethiopia documents one of the world’s most ancient and spiritually resonant musical traditions. The begena—a large ten-string lyre associated with King David—has been used for prayer, meditation, and religious reflection in Ethiopia for thousands of years. These recordings present master players whose music is inseparable from devotion, silence, and contemplation.

Recorded in Addis Ababa in 1999 and 2008 by Pit Budde, the album offers an unfiltered and deeply intimate listening experience. The low, buzzing resonance of the begena and the restrained, meditative vocal delivery create a powerful sense of stillness and focus. As explained by master musician Alemu Aga, the instrument carries a unique ability to quiet the listener and invite reflection, transcending cultural and geographic boundaries.
